In the mid 1980s, Procter & Gamble sought to continue their innovative approach to the detergent market by introducing a scent element to their line of Gain detergents. Prior to the 1980s, detergents were focused on maintaining a cleansing property but had no vested interest in improving the smell of the cleaned products. Around 1981, Gain began introducing various chemical compounds and perfumes to their product. Over the period of 30 years, the scent has been refined and become a signature element of Gain detergents.
